Tom Ciesielski
In Loving Memory of Thomas "Tom" Ciesielski (1947–2025)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas “Tom” Ciesielski, who left us on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. A beloved member of the Hull Foundation and Learning Center for the Blind community, Tom’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of our organization.
Tom served the Hull Foundation in many roles over the years: as a longtime Board Member, Past Board President, Grant Writer, Past Executive Director, mentor, and regular guest at many of our retreats and events. His contributions were not only administrative — they were deeply personal. He had a gift for guiding others, helping us all see the world more clearly through the lens of sight loss and blindness. He challenged us to rethink accessibility, to listen more closely, and to act with greater compassion.
Known for his dry wit and playful spirit, Tom often teased with a straight face, leaving many to wonder if he was serious — a quality that became a cherished part of his charm. One of his favorite sayings was, “Just do it and ask for forgiveness later,” advice that helped inspire bolder leadership and a deeper sense of trust among those who worked with him.
Tom was a proud member of the Hollywood Lions Club, where his commitment to service extended far beyond the Hull Foundation. Helping others was a central part of his life — whether through writing grants, offering a steady hand of mentorship, or simply sitting outside at events, sharing heartfelt conversations with guests.
One memory that captures Tom’s spirit comes from Darlene, a longtime guest and now Board Member:
“The first time I met Tom was at my first adventure retreat, when we were partners in a tandem defective kayak. No matter how we paddled, we spun in circles until they gave us a different boat. Ever since, whenever we met at a retreat, Tom would ask me with a sly grin, ‘Darlene, are you going to paddle in circles this summer?’ It always made me smile. This summer, I’ll be sure to paddle at least one circle in his honor.”
Tom’s kindness, humor, wisdom, and generosity touched everyone he met. He leaves behind a stronger, more compassionate Hull Foundation — and a community that will miss him dearly.
Rest in peace, Tom. Your ripple effects will continue for generations to come.
